Case Study: Re-roofing of Grade 2 Vicarage in Rosemary Clay Tiles

Re-roofing in rosemary clay tiles at it’s absolute best! Check out this gorgeous property! Recently re-roofed with brand new Rosemary clay tiles, this historic building was originally constructed in 1873 as a vicarage by Norman Shaw for the Holy Trinity Church (since demolished).

This beautiful property has since been divided into two separate dwellings. Fun fact: The stone lintel is inscribed with “HAEC DOMUS PERITVRA AEDIF 1873” in Latin which means ‘This house has been built in 1873’. The original red clay roof tiles lasted 150 years!

Project Overview

The property owners aimed to boost their roof’s energy efficiency and replace the tiles with modern Rosemary Clay Tiles. Since it’s a Grade 2 Listed Building, they needed approval from Bradford Building Control’s conservation team. As soon as they got the green light in July 2024, work kicked off right away!

The Works

Chimney Re-build

Before starting any re-roofing work, one of the chimneys needed to be completely rebuilt. These remarkable chimneys vary in height, with the rebuilt one standing over 6 meters tall! Clearly, this was a daunting task not suited for the faint-hearted!

Introducing our Eco-roof using TLX Gold: our new insulated and breathable felt that boosts your roof’s energy efficiency by 5x, reducing the U-value from 3 to 0.6 W/m²K. This innovative product complies with Part Lb of building regulations as is used in many listed and historical buildings to improve energy efficiency.

We also revamped the roof with new Rosemary clay tiles in a stunning light mixed brindle red, featuring authentic shades of red, grey, and black. It looks vintage, but it’s brand new!

The original quadruple curve red clay ridge tiles have been restored, and we added “Heritage Conservation Windows” by Velux. These edge-to-edge glass windows are designed for listed buildings, maintaining the original look while adding a modern touch.

Project Completion Time

After 20 weeks, our project is complete! Huge shoutout to our NVQ Level 3 Heritage Roofing team, led by Adam Warner, with Christopher Hopkins as the Contracts Manager.
