As more homeowners invest in solar energy, in-roof solar systems have become an increasingly popular choice thanks to their clean appearance and seamless integration with the roof. However, not all in-roof / integrated systems are built to the same standard, and choosing the cheapest option rather than the best in-roof solar system available can often lead to long-term issues.
At Green and Heritage Roofing, we have over 20 years of experience installing in-roof solar systems on traditional and heritage properties.
As a Chartered Building Engineer and an NVQ Level 3 Heritage Roofing Contractor, our MD, Chris Hopkins, has seen clear and consistent differences in the quality of systems available on the market. While many products may look similar once installed, their design, materials, and long-term performance can vary significantly
Many systems commonly used by national housebuilders are designed to work with a wide range of solar panels and are often selected primarily on cost.
These systems typically use plastic back trays installed above the roofing membrane, along with a simple front apron that finishes against the surrounding slates or tiles. While this approach can help reduce upfront costs, it raises concerns about long-term durability and weather resistance.
The system we choose to install is the Viridian Solar Clearline Fusion in-roof system, manufactured by Marley.
Although it represents a higher initial investment, we believe it is properly engineered to function as part of the roof structure, rather than simply being fitted into it.
Each panel is independently supported by the roof battens, while purpose-designed aluminium flashings are installed around the system in a similar way to a Velux roof window. Instead of relying on plastic trays that may become brittle over time, the use of aluminium components provides a far more durable and weather-resistant solution and in our opinion this system is one of the best in-roof solar systems on the market today.
A roof covering is expected to last for decades, and an in-roof solar system should be designed with the same lifespan in mind. Homeowners should take the time to research how a system is constructed before making a decision, rather than focusing solely on upfront cost.
Choosing a well-engineered, high-quality in-roof solar system can help protect your property, reduce future maintenance issues, and deliver better long-term value and peace of mind.
