Our solution was to remove the concrete tiles, battens, and felt underlay, clearing them from the site.
We then installed TLX Gold insulated breathable membrane as underlay. To meet BS5250 standards, we added counter battens above the TLX Gold due to its low resistance.
Next, we installed battens per BS5534 and topped them with Tapco lightweight slates in pewter grey. We included Tapco ventilation at the eaves for 25,000 mm² per meter and vented ridge at the top for 5000 mm² per meter, ensuring compliance with BS5250—an often overlooked area by roofers.
We integrated Viridian Clearline Solar PV panels with the Tapco slates, which fit better than many cheaper alternatives.
We also perfectly balanced the Velux roof windows as per our clients specification ensuring a visually pleasing symmetry.

Tapco slates are designed to imitate traditional roofing slate. They are moulded on natural slate and give the same beautiful appearance of slate but are lightweight and incredibly tough. Made from a combination of pure polypropylene and virgin limestone, they come in a variety of colours to complement any traditional or heritage building and are both BBA approved and CE marked.
Tapco roof tiles will retain the gorgeous appearance of natural slates throughout their lifespan. They are designed with UV stabilisation which prevents them from fading.
Although these slates are a relatively new product, they have a life expectancy of over 40 years. Tapco are so confident in the longevity and durability of their roof slates that they also provide a 40 year BBA guarantee!
