Case Study: Lightweight Roof Renovation near Bolton Abbey, Skipton

Project Location: Hazelwood, Bolton Abbey, Nr Skipton

This lightweight roof renovation project took place just outside Skipton, in a peaceful countryside setting near at Hazelwood near Bolton Abbey. The home is a beautiful, traditional property surrounded by scenic views, and the clients wanted to update part of it without losing its character.

Project Overview

The homeowners had a large garage area that was originally enclosed with Georgian wire glass panels, fitted into mild steel frames and topped with lead caps. Over the years, this structure had started to show its age. The steel had rusted, the glass was leaking, and the roof was becoming unstable.

They wanted to bring more natural light into the space, but still keep the lightweight structure. Their goal was to turn the garage into a multi-purpose indoor space — part workshop, part garage, and a warm play area for the grandkids during winter.

The Works

To bring their vision to life, we designed a solution that was lightweight, durable, and in keeping with the look of the heritage roofing on the original building. Here’s how we did it:

• Tapco Roof Slates: We used Tapco synthetic slates for the new roof. These are incredibly lightweight and look just like real slate, but they’re much easier to work with and perfect for older buildings.

• Proctor Roofshield Membrane: Under the slates, we fitted Proctor Roofshield — a high-performance, breathable membrane. It helps protect the structure while allowing moisture to escape, making it ideal for a space like this.

• Velux Roof Windows: To brighten up the space, we installed nine Velux MK08 roof windows. These large windows let in lots of natural light, turning the once-dark garage into a bright, inviting area that can be used all year round.

The finished result is a modern, usable space that still fits beautifully with the original home. From the outside, the Tapco slates and Velux windows blend in so well that you’d think they’d always been there — but inside, it’s a whole new world of light and warmth.
