Case Study
We recently had the pleasure of carrying out heritage roof restoration in Steeton, a lovely village just outside Keighley in West Yorkshire. The area is full of charming stone-built homes and listed properties, each with its own unique character.
Working in places like Steeton means understanding both the history and the materials. Whether it’s stone slate, lime mortar, or traditional techniques like lead work, we make sure every detail respects the original design and construction of the property.
Our experience with listed building roofing in West Yorkshire means your home is always in expert hands.
We recently had the pleasure of working on a beautiful Grade II listed home in Steeton, Keighley. The owners wanted to improve the insulation in their converted loft space, but without affecting the character and charm of their historic property.
This project was all about finding the perfect balance between modern performance and traditional appearance. Using a mix of breathable insulation, skilled lead work, and time-honoured lime mortar techniques, we made the home warmer, more efficient — and completely true to its heritage.
To boost the loft’s energy efficiency, we installed TLX Gold insulation — a breathable, high-performance layer that’s perfect for older roofs. It helps keep warmth in during the colder months, while allowing moisture to escape, which is important for the health of any heritage property.
It’s a great solution for anyone looking to improve insulation without compromising the original structure or style of the building.
While the whole roof got a full upgrade, we wanted to take a moment to spotlight the incredible craft of lead welding — a skill not often seen these days but essential for restoring listed buildings properly.
In our latest video, you’ll see Adam in action as he demonstrates the process up close. Lead welding on a heritage roof isn’t just about getting the job done — it’s about doing it right, with attention to every detail.
🎥 Watch how this traditional craft helps preserve the beauty and integrity of old buildings, one weld at a time. It’s a slow, steady, and skilled process — and we think it deserves a bit of appreciation!
Waterproofing is a key part of any roofing job, especially on older buildings. We fitted Code 4 and Code 5 lead beneath the coping stones to make sure the roof is fully sealed and protected from the elements.
One of our team members, Adam, used traditional lead welding techniques — a highly skilled process that takes real patience and precision. It’s a vital part of making sure heritage roofs are not only watertight but long-lasting too.
To keep the roof looking just as it should, we carefully removed and reinstalled the original stone slates. These slates had a lovely aged look, and it was important to preserve that natural, weathered finish.
We also repointed the ridge tiles and coping stones using a traditional lime mortar mix. Lime mortar is perfect for older buildings — it’s breathable, flexible, and helps protect the structure while blending in beautifully with the rest of the roof.
