Case Study
Standing prominently on Lapwing Lane in the heart of West Didsbury, the Old West Didsbury Town Hall is one of South Manchester’s most recognisable historic buildings. Constructed in 1881 as the offices of the Withington Local Board, the Grade II listed building was designed by architect Lawrence Booth in a distinctive Victorian civic style, featuring buff brickwork, red terracotta detailing, a slate roof and its landmark clock tower.
Over the past 140 years, the building has served a variety of civic and community functions, including as the headquarters of the Withington Urban District Council and, during the Second World War, as a refuge for local residents affected by bombing raids. Today, the former town hall remains a valued heritage asset, retaining much of its original architectural character and continuing to play an important role within the local community.
The re-roofing project formed a vital part of the building’s ongoing conservation, ensuring the long-term protection of its historic fabric while preserving an important piece of West Didsbury’s architectural heritage.
As with many historic buildings of this age and significance, ongoing maintenance is essential to safeguard both its architectural character and structural integrity.
Over time, the roof coverings and associated elements had become increasingly vulnerable to weathering, deterioration and water ingress, presenting a risk to the fabric of the building below.
Recognising the importance of preserving this landmark structure for future generations, a comprehensive re-roofing scheme was commissioned to restore the roof to its former condition, improve its long-term performance and ensure the continued protection of this important heritage asset.
The project required a sensitive and considered approach, balancing modern construction standards with the conservation requirements of a Grade II listed Victorian civic building.
"We recently used Green and Heritage Roofing to complete the works at Pabla + Pabla Solicitors, and the whole experience was excellent from start to finish. Chris was professional and helpful throughout, always keeping us informed and making the process smooth. Adam, who carried out the work with Tyne was fantastic. They were extremely hardworking and did a brilliant job. They were very polite with all staff and always worked with us to ensure staff could utilise as much of the car park as possible. The quality of the work is exceptional, and we’re really pleased with the results. Highly recommended."
